Description

Tornado Potatoes Spiraled Snack is a fun and crispy baked potato treat perfect as a snack or appetizer. Made by spiral-cutting russet potatoes on skewers and seasoning them with a flavorful blend of garlic, paprika, and onion powder, then baked until golden and crispy. Optional Parmesan cheese and parsley add a delicious finishing touch.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes and Skewers

  • 4 medium russet potatoes
  • skewers (wooden or metal)

Seasoning

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Optional Garnish

  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • chopped parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Heat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleaning easier.
  2. Clean and Skewer Potatoes: Wash and scrub the russet potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt. Insert a skewer lengthwise through the center of each potato to prepare for spiral cutting.
  3. Spiral Cut Potatoes: Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the potato in a spiral around the skewer by rotating the potato while slicing. Take care to maintain even spacing and depth.
  4. Stretch the Spirals: Gently pull the potatoes along the skewer to separate the spirals, creating space between each layer which allows for more even cooking and crispiness.
  5. Mix Seasoning: In a small bowl, combine olive oil or melted butter with garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to create a flavorful coating.
  6. Brush the Potatoes: Brush the seasoning mixture generously over the spiraled potatoes, making sure to coat in between the spiral layers for full flavor coverage.
  7. Bake the Potatoes: Place the seasoned potatoes on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 30–40 minutes, turning them once halfway through the cooking time to ensure even browning and crispiness.
  8. Optional Garnish and Serve: Once baked to a golden brown and crispy texture, sprinkle the potatoes with grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley for added flavor and presentation. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, soak the spiral-cut potatoes in cold water for 30 minutes before baking, then pat dry thoroughly.
  • You can deep fry the spiral potatoes instead of baking for a traditional fair-style crispy snack.
  • Use gloves or be cautious while spiral cutting to avoid cuts with the sharp knife.
  • Adjust seasoning quantities according to taste preferences.
