Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 8 slices white sandwich bread, crusts removed
- 1/2 pound raw prawns or shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 egg white
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
- 1 green onion, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce or sriracha (more to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Prepare the Prawn Paste: In a food processor, combine the raw prawns, egg white, minced garlic, grated ginger, finely chopped green onion, soy sauce, sesame oil, chili garlic sauce, salt, and cornstarch. Pulse several times until a thick, cohesive paste forms. Scrape down the sides as needed to ensure even mixing.
- Spread Mixture on Bread: Lay out the white sandwich bread slices with crusts removed. Evenly spread a generous layer of the prawn paste on one side of each bread slice, making sure to cover most of the surface.
- Apply Sesame Seeds: Sprinkle sesame seeds over the prawn-coated side of each bread slice. Press lightly to help the seeds adhere firmly to the paste.
- Cut into Triangles: Using a sharp knife, cut each bread slice diagonally in half to form two triangles, perfect for finger food or appetizers.
- Heat Oil for Frying: Pour about 1 inch of vegetable oil into a skillet and heat it over medium heat until hot but not smoking.
- Fry the Toast: Carefully place the bread triangles prawn side down into the hot oil. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes until the prawn paste turns golden and cooked through. Then flip the triangles and fry the other side for 1 to 2 minutes until the bread is crisp and golden brown.
- Drain Excess Oil: Remove the fried prawn toasts from the skillet and transfer them onto a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.
- Serve: Serve the spicy prawn toast hot as a delicious appetizer accompanied by sweet chili sauce or soy dipping sauce for added flavor.
Notes
- For a healthier alternative, you can use an air fryer: lightly brush the prawn-coated bread with oil and cook at 375°F for 6–8 minutes until golden and crispy.
- The prawn paste can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
- This recipe is perfect as a party snack or an appetizer at gatherings.
