Ingredients
Scale
Dough and Sausages
- 1 pound refrigerated pizza dough
- 24 mini cocktail sausages or hot dogs, cut in half
Boiling Solution
- 6 cups water
- 1/4 cup baking soda
Toppings and Finishing
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Coarse pretzel salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (optional)
- Mustard or cheese sauce for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Shape Dough and Wrap Sausages: Divide the pizza dough into 24 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 5-inch-long rope, then wrap each rope around a mini sausage half, stretching the dough slightly to cover completely and sealing the ends securely.
- Prepare Baking Soda Bath: In a large pot, bring 6 cups of water to a boil and carefully add 1/4 cup baking soda, stirring to dissolve. This bath helps create the classic pretzel texture on the dough.
- Boil Pretzel Dogs: Working in batches, gently lower the wrapped sausages into the boiling baking soda water and boil for 20 to 30 seconds. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Egg Wash and Salt: Brush each pretzel dog with the beaten egg and sprinkle generously with coarse pretzel salt to enhance flavor and appearance.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the pretzels turn a deep golden brown color.
- Optional Butter Finish: If desired, brush the baked pretzel dogs with melted unsalted butter for a glossy finish and added richness.
- Serve: Serve warm with mustard or cheese sauce on the side for dipping.
Notes
- Do not skip the baking soda bath as it is essential for achieving the classic pretzel’s chewy texture.
- Leftover pretzel dogs can be reheated in the oven for best results, maintaining their crisp exterior.
- For a spicier twist, add your favorite seasoning to the dough before wrapping.
- Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
