Ingredients
Scale
For the Dough
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 3/4 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more as needed)
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
For the Maple Glaze
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, melted butter, salt, egg, and the yeast mixture. Gradually stir in the flour until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Donuts: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness on a floured surface. Cut into rectangles approximately 1.5 x 4 inches. Place the pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and allow to rise again for 30–45 minutes.
- Fry the Donuts: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the dough rectangles in batches for 1–2 minutes per side, until they turn a beautiful golden brown. Drain the cooked donuts on paper towels and let them cool slightly.
- Prepare the Maple Glaze: In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Stir in maple syrup, milk, and vanilla extract. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar until smooth and glossy.
- Glaze the Donuts: Dip the tops of each donut bar into the maple glaze, allowing excess to drip off. Place the glazed donuts on a cooling rack and let the glaze set before serving.
Notes
- Use real pure maple syrup for the most authentic and rich flavor in the glaze.
- These donuts are best enjoyed fresh to retain their fluffy texture and crisp exterior.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
- Reheat briefly in the microwave for a warm and comforting treat.
