Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 1 package of graham crackers (about 12 full crackers), crushed
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
Whipped Cream
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Key Lime Custard
- 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1/2 cup key lime juice (fresh or bottled)
- 1/4 cup sour cream
Garnish
- Key lime zest, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Crust Mixture: In a small bowl, combine crushed graham crackers and melted butter. Stir until crumbs are well-coated and the mixture resembles wet sand. Set aside for layering.
- Make Whipped Cream: In a large bowl, beat heavy whipping cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to assemble.
- Prepare Key Lime Custard: In a separate bowl, beat softened cream cheese until smooth. Add sweetened condensed milk, key lime juice, and sour cream. Beat until fully combined and smooth to form the custard.
- Assemble the Trifle: In a large trifle dish or individual serving glasses, layer the graham cracker mixture, then key lime custard, and finally whipped cream. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of whipped cream on top.
- Garnish and Chill: Garnish the top layer with key lime zest or extra graham cracker crumbs if desired. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to meld and the trifle to set before serving.
Notes
- Use fresh key lime juice for the best authentic flavor, but bottled can be a convenient substitute.
- Ensure the cream cheese is softened to avoid lumps in the custard.
- The dessert should be refrigerated for at least 2 hours, but it can be chilled overnight.
- For a lighter version, consider reducing the powdered sugar in whipped cream or using a low-fat cream cheese substitute.
- Graham crackers can be crushed finely or coarsely depending on your texture preference.
