Description

This irresistibly cheesy Italian-style meatloaf combines ground beef and Italian sausage with flavorful herbs, Parmesan, and marinara sauce for a comforting and satisfying main course. Topped with melted mozzarella and fresh parsley, it pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or spaghetti, delivering classic Italian-American comfort food that’s perfect for family dinners or meal prep.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (or half beef, half Italian sausage)
  • 1/2 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Toppings and Sauces

  • 1 cup marinara sauce (divided)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (for topping)
  • Additional chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a loaf pan to prevent sticking during baking.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, gently mix ground meat, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, milk, eggs, onion, garlic, parsley, oregano, salt, and pepper using your hands or a spoon. Mix just until combined to avoid a dense texture.
  3. Shape the Meatloaf: Form the meat mixture into a loaf shape on the baking sheet or press it into the prepared loaf pan. Spoon half of the marinara sauce evenly over the top of the meatloaf.
  4. Initial Bake: Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the meatloaf is mostly cooked through.
  5. Add Toppings and Finish Baking: Remove the meatloaf from the oven. Spread the remaining marinara sauce on top and sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Rest and Serve: Let the meatloaf rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with additional fresh parsley if desired and serve warm.

Notes

  • Serve with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or over spaghetti for a classic Italian twist.
  • This meatloaf is excellent for leftovers and makes delicious sandwiches the next day.
