Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm whole milk (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
Cheese Filling
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
For Baking and Brushing
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for greasing bowl)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing buns)
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy, signaling that the yeast is active and ready to use.
- Make Dough: Add the egg, softened butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms, ensuring all ingredients are well combined.
- Knead Dough: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic, which develops gluten structure for soft buns.
- First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Shape Buns: Punch down the risen dough to release air. Divide it into 12 equal portions. Flatten each piece slightly and place a spoonful of mozzarella and cheddar cheese in the center. Pinch edges to seal and form a ball with the cheese enclosed inside.
- Second Rise: Arrange the sealed buns seam-side down on a lined baking sheet. Cover loosely and let them rise for another 30 minutes to achieve fluffiness.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) while the buns are undergoing their second rise.
- Brush and Bake: Lightly brush the tops of the buns with melted butter to promote browning and flavor. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until the buns turn golden brown on top.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the buns from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving to enjoy the gooey cheese and soft texture.
Notes
- Substitute Monterey Jack or Gouda cheese for a different flavor profile.
- For extra flavor, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese or dried herbs on top before baking.
- Store leftover buns in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheat before serving for best taste.
