Description
Creamy and delicious mashed sweet potatoes made with butter, heavy cream, and a hint of sugar for a perfect balance of flavors. This easy stovetop recipe results in tender, flavorful mashed sweet potatoes that make an ideal side dish for any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Mashed Sweet Potatoes
- 2 pounds sweet potatoes (approximately 3 medium or 2 large)
- 4 tablespoons butter, cut into four pieces
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Salt & freshly ground pepper to season
Instructions
- Prepare Sweet Potatoes: Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into small, evenly sized pieces to ensure they cook evenly.
- Combine Ingredients: In a large saucepan, add the sweet potatoes, heavy cream, butter, sugar, and salt. Stir gently to combine all ingredients.
- Cook the Potatoes: Cover the pan and cook over low heat for 35 to 45 minutes. The sweet potatoes are done when they are very tender and fall apart easily when poked with a fork.
- Mash the Potatoes: Remove the pan from heat and use a potato masher to mash the sweet potatoes until smooth and creamy.
- Season to Taste: Finally, season with additional salt and freshly ground pepper according to your preference. Serve warm.
Notes
- For a richer taste, you can substitute heavy cream with half-and-half or whole milk.
- If sweeter mashed potatoes are preferred, increase the sugar slightly or add a touch of maple syrup.
- Use unsalted butter if you want more control over the saltiness.
- You can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm spice flavor.
- Ensure low heat is maintained during cooking to prevent the potatoes from sticking or burning.
