Description

Creamy and delicious mashed sweet potatoes made with butter, heavy cream, and a hint of sugar for a perfect balance of flavors. This easy stovetop recipe results in tender, flavorful mashed sweet potatoes that make an ideal side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Mashed Sweet Potatoes

  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes (approximately 3 medium or 2 large)
  • 4 tablespoons butter, cut into four pieces
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Salt & freshly ground pepper to season

Instructions

  1. Prepare Sweet Potatoes: Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into small, evenly sized pieces to ensure they cook evenly.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large saucepan, add the sweet potatoes, heavy cream, butter, sugar, and salt. Stir gently to combine all ingredients.
  3. Cook the Potatoes: Cover the pan and cook over low heat for 35 to 45 minutes. The sweet potatoes are done when they are very tender and fall apart easily when poked with a fork.
  4. Mash the Potatoes: Remove the pan from heat and use a potato masher to mash the sweet potatoes until smooth and creamy.
  5. Season to Taste: Finally, season with additional salt and freshly ground pepper according to your preference. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a richer taste, you can substitute heavy cream with half-and-half or whole milk.
  • If sweeter mashed potatoes are preferred, increase the sugar slightly or add a touch of maple syrup.
  • Use unsalted butter if you want more control over the saltiness.
  • You can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm spice flavor.
  • Ensure low heat is maintained during cooking to prevent the potatoes from sticking or burning.
