Description

These homemade cinnamon rolls are soft, fluffy, and packed with a sweet cinnamon-sugar filling. Topped with a simple powdered sugar glaze, they make the perfect indulgent breakfast or snack. With a tender yeast dough and classic flavor combination, these cinnamon rolls are a delightful treat to bake and enjoy fresh from the oven.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs

Filling

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

Icing

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a tablespoon of sugar. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until foamy, indicating the yeast is active and ready to use.
  2. Make the dough: Add melted butter, remaining sugar, eggs, and salt into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms, ensuring all ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Prepare the filling and shape rolls: Roll the risen dough out into a rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the surface, then sprinkle with brown sugar and ground cinnamon.
  5. Form the rolls: Roll the dough tightly into a log shape. Cut into 12 equal rolls and place them in a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise for an additional 20 minutes.
  6. Bake the cinnamon rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  7. Make and add the icing: While rolls are baking, mix powdered sugar and milk to create a glaze. Drizzle the icing over the warm cinnamon rolls before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the milk is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
  • You can substitute whole milk with a plant-based milk for a dairy-free option but adjust the butter accordingly.
  • For extra fluffy rolls, avoid overworking the dough during kneading.
  • Leftover cinnamon rolls can be stored in an airtight container and reheated gently before serving.
  • Feel free to add chopped nuts or raisins to the filling for added texture and flavor.
