Ingredients
Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp garlic powder
Cheese and Herbs
- 1½ cups shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
- 1 tsp dried rosemary or oregano (optional)
Instructions
- Activate yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar, then sprinkle active dry yeast on top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy and bubbles appear, indicating that the yeast is active.
- Mix dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, and garlic powder. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir the ingredients together for 3-5 minutes just until combined and a dough starts to form.
- Knead dough and add cheese: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. During the last few minutes of kneading, fold in the shredded cheese and dried rosemary or oregano if using, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- First rise: Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Shape and bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf or desired form. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
Notes
- For a stronger garlic flavor, you can brush the top of the bread with melted garlic butter before baking.
- Substitute cheddar with mozzarella or a blend of cheeses for different flavors.
- Let the bread cool completely on a wire rack before slicing to avoid a gummy texture.
- If you want a crispier crust, place a pan of water in the oven while baking to create steam.
- Store in an airtight container or bag for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
