Description

Delicious and easy French Toast Cups made with brioche or challah bread, soaked in a cinnamon-spiced custard, baked to golden perfection. Perfect for a crowd, these individual servings are great for breakfast or brunch, served with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 6 slices brioche or challah bread

Custard Mixture

  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

For Greasing

  • Butter or cooking spray for greasing muffin tin

Serving Suggestions

  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and grease: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and generously grease a standard 12-cup muffin tin with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare bread cups: Cut each slice of brioche or challah bread into quarters. Gently press 3–4 pieces into each muffin cup, shaping them to form a cup that can hold the custard mixture.
  3. Make custard: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until fully combined and smooth.
  4. Soak bread cups: Slowly pour the egg mixture evenly over each bread cup in the muffin tin, allowing the custard to soak thoroughly into the bread.
  5. Press bread down: Lightly press the pieces of bread in each muffin cup to ensure the custard is fully absorbed and the bread is well saturated.
  6. Bake: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for 22 to 25 minutes, or until the French toast cups are puffed up, golden brown on top, and set in the center.
  7. Cool and remove: Remove the tin from the oven and let the French toast cups cool slightly. Gently lift each cup out of the muffin tin using a small spatula or knife if necessary.
  8. Serve: Serve the French toast cups warm, topped with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, or fresh berries according to your preference.

Notes

  • Use brioche or challah for best texture and flavor due to their rich, soft crumb.
  • Make sure to grease the muffin tin well to prevent sticking.
  • Allow the custard enough time to fully soak into the bread for moist results.
  • These cups can be made ahead and reheated gently in the oven or microwave.
  • For a dairy-free option, substitute whole milk with almond or oat milk.
  • Adding chopped nuts or chocolate chips inside the cups before baking can add extra flavor and texture.
