Description

A quick and easy Salisbury steak recipe featuring lean ground beef patties smothered in a rich brown gravy, perfect for a comforting weeknight meal. Ready in just 20 minutes and serving four, this dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a classic American dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

For the Gravy

  • 2 packets Brown Gravy Mix (approximately 1 oz each)
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare Patties: In a large bowl, add all patty ingredients including the ground beef, bread crumbs, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Use clean hands to mix thoroughly until well combined. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and flatten each into a patty shape.
  2. Cook Patties: Heat 1 tablespoon of avocado oil in a skillet over medium heat. Place the patties carefully into the skillet and cook until browned on both sides and fully cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Adjust the heat as necessary to avoid burning. Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make Gravy: In a bowl, whisk together the brown gravy mix, hot water, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth and well combined.
  4. Combine and Simmer: Pour the prepared gravy mixture into the same skillet where the patties were cooked, scraping up any browned bits and juices left behind. Bring the mixture to a simmer over low heat. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and stir gently to coat. Let everything simmer together for 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens slightly. If the gravy is too thick, add an additional 1/4 cup of hot water and stir to adjust consistency.
  5. Serve: Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, spooning extra gravy over each patty. They pair excellently with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a hearty meal.

Notes

  • To keep the patties moist, avoid overworking the meat mixture when mixing.
  • Adjust the seasoning to taste, especially the Worcestershire sauce and ketchup, to suit your preference.
  • You can substitute bread crumbs with gluten-free options to make this recipe gluten-free.
  • If preferred, use beef broth instead of hot water for richer gravy flavor.
  • Leftover Salisbury steak can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
