Ingredients
Scale
Beef Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Casserole
- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (Yukon gold or russet)
- 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Garnish (Optional)
- Chopped parsley
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prepare it for layering.
- Cook Beef and Onion: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink. Drain off excess fat. Season the mixture with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Set aside the beef mixture.
- Prepare Soup Mixture: In a small bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Layer Ingredients: Spread half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish. Over the potatoes, layer half of the seasoned beef mixture. Pour half of the soup mixture evenly over the beef. Repeat these layers with the remaining potatoes, beef, and soup mixture.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and place it in the oven. Bake for 45 minutes to allow the potatoes to cook through and flavors to meld.
- Add Cheese and Continue Baking: Remove the foil, evenly sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the casserole. Return the dish to the oven and bake uncovered for another 15 to 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
- Rest and Garnish: Let the casserole cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving to allow it to set. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired for a fresh finish.
Notes
- This casserole can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated overnight before baking for convenience.
- For extra flavor, consider adding a layer of cooked bacon between the layers or swapping the cream of mushroom soup for cream of cheddar or cream of chicken soup.
