Description

These crispy homemade onion rings are perfectly golden and crunchy, made with a light batter featuring flour, cornstarch, and sparkling water. Fried to perfection, they make a delicious snack or side dish, served best fresh out of the fryer.

Ingredients

Scale

Onion Rings

  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced into 1 cm rings

Batter

  • 150 g all-purpose flour
  • 50 g cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt (plus more for sprinkling)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 250 ml club soda or sparkling water

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Heat Oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 175°C (350°F), ensuring it’s hot enough for frying but not smoking.
  2. Make Batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, paprika, and garlic powder until fully combined.
  3. Add Club Soda: Slowly pour in the club soda while whisking to create a smooth, slightly thick batter. Allow it to rest for 5 minutes to improve texture.
  4. Prepare Onion Rings: Separate the onion slices into individual rings and pat them dry with a paper towel to ensure batter sticks well.
  5. Batter the Rings: Dip each onion ring into the batter, letting any excess drip off to prevent clumps.
  6. Fry Onion Rings: Fry the battered onion rings in small batches for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, turning carefully until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Drain and Season: Transfer the fried onion rings to a wire rack to drain excess oil, then sprinkle with additional salt while still hot.
  8. Serve: Serve the onion rings immediately with your favorite dipping sauces to enjoy the best crispiness.

Notes

  • Use fresh, cold club soda for the lightest, crispiest batter.
  • Maintain oil temperature between 170°C and 180°C for even frying.
  • Pat onions dry to help the batter adhere better.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan to avoid soggy onion rings.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture; onion rings lose crispness as they cool.
