Ingredients
Scale
Onion Rings
- 2 large yellow onions, sliced into 1 cm rings
Batter
- 150 g all-purpose flour
- 50 g cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt (plus more for sprinkling)
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 250 ml club soda or sparkling water
For Frying
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Heat Oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 175°C (350°F), ensuring it’s hot enough for frying but not smoking.
- Make Batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, paprika, and garlic powder until fully combined.
- Add Club Soda: Slowly pour in the club soda while whisking to create a smooth, slightly thick batter. Allow it to rest for 5 minutes to improve texture.
- Prepare Onion Rings: Separate the onion slices into individual rings and pat them dry with a paper towel to ensure batter sticks well.
- Batter the Rings: Dip each onion ring into the batter, letting any excess drip off to prevent clumps.
- Fry Onion Rings: Fry the battered onion rings in small batches for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, turning carefully until golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and Season: Transfer the fried onion rings to a wire rack to drain excess oil, then sprinkle with additional salt while still hot.
- Serve: Serve the onion rings immediately with your favorite dipping sauces to enjoy the best crispiness.
Notes
- Use fresh, cold club soda for the lightest, crispiest batter.
- Maintain oil temperature between 170°C and 180°C for even frying.
- Pat onions dry to help the batter adhere better.
- Do not overcrowd the pan to avoid soggy onion rings.
- Serve immediately for the best texture; onion rings lose crispness as they cool.
