Ingredients
Scale
Mushrooms:
- 8 oz whole button or cremini mushrooms, cleaned and dried
Coating:
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Salt to taste
- Oil for frying or spray for baking/air-frying
Garlic Butter (optional):
- 2 tbsp butter, melted
- 1 clove garlic, finely minced
- 1 tbsp chopped parsley
Instructions
- Prep mushrooms: Optionally remove the stems from the mushrooms but keep them whole. Pat the mushrooms thoroughly dry to ensure the coating sticks well.
- Set up coating stations: Arrange three bowls: Bowl 1 with flour, Bowl 2 with beaten eggs, and Bowl 3 with panko breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt.
- Coat mushrooms: Dredge each mushroom first in the flour, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat with the seasoned panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere the crumbs well.
- Cook mushrooms by frying: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pan or skillet. Fry the mushrooms in batches for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Alternate cooking by baking: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the coated mushrooms on a greased baking sheet and lightly spray them with oil. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, flipping halfway through to ensure even crispiness.
- Alternate cooking by air frying: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Place mushrooms in the basket and air fry for 10 to 12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through cooking to maintain even crisping.
- Prepare garlic butter (optional): Mix melted butter with finely minced garlic and chopped parsley. Drizzle the garlic butter over the hot mushrooms or serve it on the side as a dipping sauce.
- Serve: Enjoy the crispy garlic mushroom bites immediately with your favorite dips such as ranch, garlic aioli, spicy mayo, or marinara sauce.
Notes
- Make sure mushrooms are completely dry before coating to achieve maximum crispiness.
- If using baking or air frying methods, lightly spraying oil helps mimic the crispiness of frying.
- Adjust seasoning in the breadcrumb mixture to your taste preferences.
- For a vegan option, substitute eggs with a flaxseed egg or aquafaba and use vegan butter for the garlic butter.
- Leave stems on or remove based on personal texture preference.
