Description

This easy Chicken Cheesesteaks recipe features thinly sliced chicken breasts sautéed with bell peppers and onions, seasoned perfectly, and topped with melted provolone cheese. Served on toasted hoagie rolls, these sandwiches make a delicious and satisfying meal that’s quick to prepare and perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Vegetables

  • 1½ pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Cheese and Bread

  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls, split and lightly toasted

Instructions

  1. Heat the fat: Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat until melted and hot.
  2. Cook the chicken: Add the thinly sliced chicken breasts to the skillet and season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and lightly browned.
  3. Sauté the vegetables: Push the cooked chicken to one side of the skillet. Add the sliced green bell pepper and yellow onion to the other side. Sauté for 5 to 6 minutes until the vegetables are softened and slightly caramelized.
  4. Combine and melt cheese: Stir the chicken and vegetables together and reduce the heat to low. Layer the provolone cheese slices over the chicken mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil for 1 to 2 minutes until the cheese melts thoroughly.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches: Spoon the cheesy chicken and vegetable mixture into the toasted hoagie rolls. Serve the sandwiches hot immediately for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Add sautéed mushrooms or jalapeños for an extra layer of flavor and spice.
  • Substitute provolone cheese with mozzarella or white American cheese if preferred.
  • Use gluten-free hoagie rolls to make this recipe gluten-free.
  • Leftover filling can be reheated gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
