Description

These Apple Cheddar Puff Bites are a delightful combination of tart Granny Smith apples and sharp cheddar cheese wrapped in flaky puff pastry. Sweetened with brown sugar and fragrant with cinnamon, they’re perfect as a savory-sweet appetizer or snack, baked to golden perfection in under 35 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry sheet, thawed

Filling

  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced thin
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Finish

  • 1 large egg, for egg wash

Instructions

  1. Prep: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat to prevent sticking. Toss the thinly sliced Granny Smith apples with the brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl, ensuring every slice is well coated to infuse sweetness and spice.
  2. Assembly: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut into 4-inch squares. Place a spoonful of the apple mixture and a sprinkle of shredded sharp cheddar cheese in the center of each square. Fold the corners of the pastry squares inward to seal the filling inside, creating little puff bites.
  3. Finish: Beat the large egg and brush it gently over the tops of each puff bite. This egg wash will give them a beautiful golden brown color as they bake.
  4. Bake: Arrange the puff bites on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving to enjoy the perfect blend of savory and sweet.

Notes

  • Ensure the puff pastry is fully thawed before rolling to prevent cracking.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or ginger to the apple mixture.
  • Serve warm for the best texture and taste.
  • These can be made ahead and baked just before serving.
